Why I Want to Be a Nurse: A Commitment to Care, Empowerment, and Advocacy

Nursing is more than a profession-it is a calling that weaves together scientific knowledge with human caring. The choice of nursing as a profession is a very personal one, yet it reflects an even larger commitment to respond to societal needs. I want to become a nurse because it allows me to make a meaningful impact on patients' lives, empowers communities through education and prevention, and offers opportunities for professional growth in a rapidly evolving field. However, skeptics argue that nursing is emotionally and physically taxing, leading to high burnout rates. While these are legitimate concerns, they can be minimized through systemic reforms and personal resilience, hence making nursing a very rewarding career path.

Nursing presents an avenue to create a tangible difference in the lives of people, even at their most vulnerable moments. According to Bally et al. (2020), nurses spend more hours with the patients than any other caregiver; this ensures holistic care. Whether it is administering life-saving interventions or offering emotional support, nurses are instrumental in improving patient outcomes. This direct involvement in patient care simply meets my desire to meaningfully contribute to others' well-being. Empathetic nursing care, studies have shown, improves recovery rates and satisfies patients, showing the transformative power this profession can deliver (Mubita et al., 2019). Nursing is not restricted to hospitals; rather, it spreads towards community health where education and prevention can save thousands of lives. As a nurse, I would get a chance to educate about chronic condition management, healthier lifestyle promotion, and prevention of disease outbreaks. For instance, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the role of vaccination drives and public health campaigns belonged significantly to nurses (Perlman et al., 2023). These activities outlined the great role that nurses play in enabling the community to take responsibility for their health. The nursing aspect that intrigues me is how it blends compassion with proactive problem-solving, creating ripple effects that benefit society at large. Nursing is a dynamic field with ample opportunities for professional development. With the rise of telehealth, artificial intelligence, and advanced practice roles, nurses can keep adding to their repertoire of skills and expertise. For example, nurse practitioners are now working in primary care roles traditionally held by physicians in underserved areas (Perlman et al., 2023). Such flexibility not only means job security but also allows them to sculpt their careers according to their interests, whether that be in pediatrics, oncology, or informatics. This makes the profession particularly appealing to lifelong learners like myself, given its innate flexibility and innovative nature.

Some critics indicate that nursing can be a very exhausting job due to high hours, emotional fatigue, and system issues that lead to high rates of burnout. According to Guttormson et al. (2022) poll conducted by the National Academy of Medicine, 63% of nurses report symptoms of burnout. This, however, does raise concern because such issues are being addressed with solutions like better staffing ratios, mental health support, and improved working conditions to name a few. Guttormson et al. (2022) personal resilience and locating the best work environment will also aid in diminishing the feeling of burnout, hence allowing a person to have a rewarding and sustainable career.

In conclusion, becoming a nurse means making a deep commitment to caring, to empowering a community, and to lifelong learning. While the challenges of burnout must not go unnoticed, they are outweighed by the enormous rewards from the profession and its ever-evolving support systems. I will, as a nurse, have the privilege of making a difference every day, not only by healing individuals but also by strengthening the fabric of society. This journey is one of purpose, compassion, and resilience—qualities that define not only nursing but also the person I aspire to be.
